Selet Yield and Quality Brochure

Soybean farmers traditionally determine crop value on yield, but soybean processors are paying for protein and oil. Because of Minnesota's northern climate, the soybeans grown here have lower protein content than the soybeans grown in warmer, southern regions. Minnesota soybean farmers are being discounted up to ten cents a bushel because of low protein and are losing market share to Asian countries, that prefer higher protein soybean meal.

For that reason, the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council is actively participating in the United Soybean Board Select Yield and Quality Program, designed to increase farmers' and processors' awareness of the issue. Farmers are encouraged to ask for high protein varieties and processors are being encouraged to offer premiums for improved traits.
